Using Your Fan and Air Conditioner in McMurray04/13/2016The weather is finally warming up and soon you could have to turn over to your air conditioner. Along with scheduling your annual air conditioner service with the experts at Kowalski Heating & Cooling, there are a few other things you can do to stay cozy and save money this season. During the in-between season in McMurray, those far too few spring days, you probably use ceiling fans to keep comfy. Did you know that running your ceiling fan along with your air conditioner could not only keep you more cozy during the warmer days, but also save you on energy costs? In order to do that you have to ensure you’re using ceiling fans and your air conditioning correctly. Here’s a handful of things to keep in mind: Raise Your Thermostat This is where the cost savings can have the chance to come in. If you aren’t raising your thermostat you won’t be saving any money. Raising your thermostat by even a couple degrees, in addition to using your ceiling fan, shouldn’t change your comfort level too much. For every degree you raise your temperature, you’re lessening the length of the “on” cycle of your air conditioner. Adjust Air Direction Ceiling fans have a clockwise and counterclockwise setting to adjust dependent on the season. During the warmer months you’ll want to be sure the air is blowing down. You can stand below the fan to see if you feel a breeze. If you don’t, switch the direction. Ceiling fans do not actually lower the temperature of the air, but they make you feel cooler. It’s the wind chill effect. You’ll feel cooler than the temperature on the thermostat. Turn Off Fan When You’re Not There Treat your ceiling fan like you would lights, turn it off when leaving a room. If no one is in the room to take in the wind chill that a fan offers you’re wasting energy by running your fan. Don’t forget, a fan doesn’t actually cool your air, it just moves your air.
